June, 2007 ARE YOU AN "EDU-TAINER"? As a speaker, are you an "edu-tainer?" Effective speakers both educate and entertain. They have something important to say and they want the audience to listen and benefit from their message. There are 4 general objectives in speaking: to inform, inspire, persuade, and/or entertain. One speech should include at least 2, but possibly 3, or even 4 of these objectives. I say a minimum of 2 because I truly believe that the entertainment element needs to be incorporated into ALL speeches, regardless of the objective. Your main purpose in speaking is to change the audience's thinking and feeling about a topic that you believe is important. You want them to think, feel, speak and act differently, after you finish speaking; so you need to appeal to both their intellect and their emotions. |

The educator role of a speaker educates, teaches lessons, and raises the audience's level of consciousness to positively affect their lives. The educator teaches life lessons that he or she has learned from others, personal stories, events, lessons that have had significant impact, and then shares them with others for their own growth. While educating, a speaker needs to connect with or engage the audience, otherwise, the audience ends up having "screensaver eyes" or falls asleep. This is where the other speaker role comes into play – the entertainer role. To entertain does not mean you have to have the audience in stitches and rolling in the aisles, they simply need to be amused with some occasional laughter or simply smiles. Amusement creates levity in serious speeches, breaks monotony, energizes both the speaker and the audience. When people laugh or are being amused, they relax; when they relax, they learn; when they learn, they remember. Do you want them to remember your important message? Do you want to maintain their interest throughout your speech? Do you want to make a difference in their lives? Next time you deliver a speech, I challenge you to view your role as an "edu-tainer."
