UNIVERSAL EMOTIONS Help You Connect with Your Audience

Connecting

WHAT are they? Happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, disgust, and fear

WHO can use them? All speakers can and should use universal emotions because all people experience them in their everyday lives. As speakers, we must connect with our audiences. We need to stop giving speeches and start having conversations where we tell emotive stories, as we do with friends.

WHY are they effective connectors? “Emotion IS the fast lane to the brain,” (D. Stevenson). People are not moved to action by their intellect; they are moved by emotion. Although we all have different life stories, everyone experiences these emotions at one time or another. Individuals in an audience will be able to connect and relate to your chosen emotion but recall their own unique event.

WHERE and WHEN do we use them? These ‘slices of life’ stories can be told whenever a point needs to be anchored or emphasized. They do not need to be overly powerful, “Mount Everest” type stories (as very few people will be able to relate) rather, simple, everyday stories that embed a deep-seated, meaningful message or point.

HOW can universal emotions be used in your speech? The story is a speaker’s greatest tool as one story can be used to make a variety of points, depending on which is appropriate for the situation. Start by jotting down interesting personal stories. Whenever a story entertains, inspires, persuades you in any way, write it down. Recall stories from your past; recall their sights, sounds, and sensations. Remember stories that influenced you in your life journey. If they were important to you, they may very well be significant and life enhancing to others.

THREE important questions you need to ask yourself in the pre-writing and writing stages of your speech are:
What do I want my audience to think, feel, say, or do AFTER I finish speaking?
(ie; what is the lesson they will learn to enhance their life?)

Which personal story/ies should I use to best emphasize my message/point? Which stories demonstrate one of the 6 universal emotions?
Are my stories “YOU” focused? While the story may be your experience, the message is for them. It’s not about I, the speaker, but YOU, the audience. Check the number of times the words “I” and “YOU” are used. There should be far more of the latter than the former.
